“I have been having lessons with Phil for over 5 years, after a trial lesson in which he said he would teach me from scratch.
Over the past years under his tuition I have learnt the fundamentals like how to hold a stick in the correct manner, a lot of basic rudiments like rolls, flams, drags and paradiddles etc – to more advanced skills like the Moeller technique and different time signatures. The lessons pushed me every time, but I would always come out of a lesson feeling good, and like I had been worked musically and mentally. Phil would always make sure I understood what we had been working on before we moved on, and would set me homework every lesson to work on until our next meeting. He was very supportive of other projects I was doing and would help if I ever had any questions.
As I progressed in the world of drumming, I became busier and he was very understanding of this and was flexible as to when booking lessons. He prepared me for the industry, and taught me what he could to become a session drummer – which meant covering a variety of styles and genres.
As well as playing techniques, he also taught me to read drum notation and I passed various exams with distinctions with the help of this skill.
I am now doing very well in my career as a session drummer in demand by various bands around the South East, and am also the MD (Musical Director) and drummer of the band ‘Valley Of Kings’. I have worked in various studios around East Sussex and owe a lot of my success to what I learnt with Phil.
He is a fine teacher and a good friend.”
